Who is conning whom?

In desperate need of money to flee an angry ‘business’ partner, con artist Sabrina Raven lifts the wallet of a nutty Italian rich guy she meets in an airport bar. But she’s intrigued by the tale he spins of a magical painting he’s searching for, a painting stolen from his village during World War II. Her instincts insist there’s a game here, instincts validated when she discovers Mr. Rich Guy Vincenzo Nicholazzi had actually wanted her to steal his wallet. He’d wanted proof he’d found a thief. In fact, for her larcenous services he’s willing to pay a whopping hundred grand if she can steal the magic painting back for him. Sabrina thinks she’s found the easiest mark in the world…until Vincenzo, honest, gentle, and warm-hearted, starts working his own brand of magic on her.

True story: my obstetrician ordered an ultrasound to find out why my daughter hadn’t yet been born ten days after her due date. But I knew what was holding up the works – I hadn’t finished this book yet! Two days after writing “The End” I held my other, and even more precious, baby in my arms.

Can a one night stand turn into love, marriage, and a baby carriage?

Valerie Kendrick is a doctor, a “good girl,” and eminently sensible. Even when about to fall into bed with the bad boy gambler she meets in a Las Vegas bar, she sets up rules: whoever gets up first will leave without waking the other. This won’t proceed past a single fantasy night. Little does Valerie realize their one night will leave her pregnant – or that Roy Beaujovais is far more complex, and responsible, than she’d imagined.

I got the idea for this story during a winter trip to Las Vegas with my husband – our first time away from our toddler. Neither of us are gamblers, so we spent the day walking up and down the strip enjoying the bigger-than-life attractions in each casino. What a place!

[The following article appeared in the Santa Monica Observer Newspaper on April 27, 2012:]

“I’d like to sell my eggs,” the woman says. She’s young and attractive, wearing tight jeans and sitting in the center of a crowded Starbucks at Lincoln and Marine. She’s talking on her cell phone. Loudly. One leg is crossed over the other and she’s kicking it. Anxiously.

I don’t think she’s referring to her chickens.

I’ve got my laptop open and I’m trying to work on my novel, but this is too good to ignore.

“Yes,” the woman says into the phone. “My eggs. How much money can I get for them?” She’s pretending nobody else is in the room. The twenty-five people around her are pretending they don’t hear her ‑‑ but they’re all listening. Come on. This is too good to ignore.

“Does it hurt?” she wants to know.

She didn’t appear to receive an honest answer to that one because she persists, still eager about the money.

As in most interactions I’ve witnessed in my twenty years of café squatting, I don’t get to hear the upshot. Did she end up selling her genetic material? And did it hurt?

I’ll never know. Those who sit eavesdropping in cafes don’t get it all. We do get a cheap desk, free wi-fi, and sometimes free parking. More than enough, I say.

Chabad members persuade a Jewish cafe-goer to don ritual tefillin.

But even those of us who are getting something for free would like to know where to find the best. Since receiving a Powerbook 100 laptop computer from my brand-new husband in 1992 (there’s a reason we’re still married), I’ve applied myself diligently to the task of finding the most amenable places in Santa Monica to park myself. Here’s my take on where to go sit in this city:

The best chance of scoring a seat

Panera Bread at 5th and Wilshire

Possibly because the coffee is so bad, there is ample seating with nice, spacious tables at Panera Bread, a counter-order style restaurant. The music is classical and the temperature is kept pleasantly warm. They discourage patrons from sitting more than 30 minutes during their lunch rush, which may be a disincentive to a serious squatter. Also, proximity to 4th and Wilshire may mean encounters with some who are a bit less than socially acceptable.

The worst chance of scoring a seat

Starbucks at 26th and Wilshire (most convenient to Franklin Elementary)

I have seen the line at this café extend down the hall past the bathrooms and out the back exit. Even though few of these thirsty customers want a seat, enough do grab one to make your chances of finding a cozy place to roost very slim. Should you be lucky enough to secure a spot, you will soon be shivering. The thermostat in all Starbucks is set and locked, temperature setting determined by corporate headquarters.

Most likely to receive a compliment on your clothes or accessories

Starbucks at 7th and Montana (convenient to Roosevelt Elementary)

I may be prejudiced, because this is MY Starbucks and I breeze through the doors often enough they know me by all of my names (the real ones and the easy-spell cup-marker ones). They know what I want to drink and they notice the jewelry I’m wearing (very important). Okay, they compliment the jewelry I’m wearing (even more important). Despite the temperature chill set by Starbucks headquarters, the manager and baristas at this café create a family-style atmosphere of warmth and camaraderie. Definitely the friendliest café in town.

Surreptitiously stowed dog makes a forbidden entry into a Starbucks

Most likely to see something you never expected (also best parking)

Starbucks at Lincoln and Marine

Maybe it’s the proximity to Venice, but most of my café stories come from this location. There’s the egg lady, but so much more. I’ve heard a knock-down drag-out phone fight between a woman and her soon-to-be ex-husband. They could have taped it, unedited, and aired it in prime time. I’ve also seen three women spring a birthday ‘surprise’ on a female friend. The surprise was the sudden entry into the café of a man dressed in a bee outfit, who sang a syrupy song (not very well) and then sat on her lap. Ouch!

Most likely to overhear a pitch for a TV show

Starbucks at 15th and Montana

All right, I’ve only heard one pitch here, but it was a really good one. A man was proposing a family comedy based on himself, and eagerly pacing through a list of hot young actors, visualizing one or the other portraying him. Needless to say, he was ten years older than any of the actors he was considering, and had a lot less hair.

And a few words regarding the dearly departed

Diedrich’s at Lincoln and Montana

The late, lamented Diedrich’s café that used to inhabit the round corner window space at Lincoln and Montana was the de facto office for a host of gainfully employed and not-so-employed scriptwriters. One of the first cafes to offer free wi-fi, Diedrich’s attracted those who needed some background noise and a cup of coffee in order to pound a keyboard. Weaving among these wannabe moguls, parents and children from the elementary school across the street lent a refreshing note of reality to the scene as they made their way toward a hot cocoa or muffin.

You may tell me I’ve missed the best coffee, or the lightest croissants – but coffee and food are the last things a serious squatter is looking for in a café. Better to ask if the tables are wide enough for a laptop, is the Internet reliable, and if the music is too loud to hear the intriguing interactions you never knew you’d witness if you hadn’t been sitting somewhere other than at home.

Fellow author and former LAPD cop, Kathy Bennett, interrogated – I mean, interviewed – me on her site in February. If you missed it, and want to know how I squirm under the lightbulb, read on…

I’m Kathy Bennett and I’m askin’ the questions and you’re going to give me some answers. Don’t even think about not telling the truth. This isn’t my first rodeo.

You see that big glass window over there? There are readers behind that glass. They’re gonna judge you on your answers and how truthful you are here in the Interrogation Room. Don’t let your readers down. Now, lets get to it…

State your name:

Alyssa Kress

Tell me about your last interaction with a police officer. What did you think about it?

The police in my city were holding a press conference regarding a slew of gang arrests they’d made. I was there because I occasionally write news stories for my husband’s local newspaper. The press officer for the police made a point of meeting me and introducing himself. I’d spoken to him on the phone many times (occasions where he was usually being cagey and not answering my questions about some news story), so it was interesting to meeting him face to face. He was very nice! Still cagey, though.

Tell me about the last time you were afraid.

There’s nothing that frightens me so much as when my children are threatened, particularly by something I can’t control, like illness.

How would your worst enemy describe you?

Brash, opinionated, and talks too much.

How would the love of your life describe you?

Brash, opinionated, and talks too much. The difference is he loves me that way! Really!

What’s the biggest misconception about you?

Definitely that I’m brash, opinionated, and talk too much. Only I may be the one with the big misconception regarding that…

What’s your biggest self-doubt?

I think most decent people’s biggest self-doubt is if they’re a good enough person. Have I been patient enough, polite enough, kind enough? I believe I fall short too much of the time.

What would you like to tell readers about the writing business that would be a surprise?

Perhaps it would surprise most people who haven’t tried it how hard it is to write a novel that makes sense – even one that supposedly follows a ‘formula.’ Those potboiler bestsellers that seem like they write themselves really don’t. Not even close!

What is your greatest weakness?

Being brash, opinionated, and talking too much.

What is your greatest strength?

Being confident (also known as brash), analytical (also known as opinionated), and articulate (also known as talking too much).

If you were going to wind up on a reality television show, which one would it be – and why?

I contend my husband and I were already on “Survivor.” We claim to be the first people kicked off the island. See, back in the 1990s we rented office space next to a guy who was producing this show nobody had ever heard of called “Eco-Challenge 2000.” This guy, Mark Burnett, had an idea for a new show, and wanted more office space in order to produce it. He asked our common landlord to give us 30 days notice so he could take over our space. I assume he was offering more money than we were in rent, so we got our 30 day notice and had to move out. It was a nice office, too: good location, lots of parking, decent rent. Thanks, Mark.

Have you ever been so mad you would have liked to punch someone? Tell me about that situation.

I have three sisters and a brother. The number of times I have punched each of them is too high to count.

Have you ever divulged a secret? Did the person who expected your discretion ever find out you’d blabbed?

I am sure I have, and I’m sure they did. Didn’t I say something above about talking too much? I strive to keep confidences, but I know I’m not perfect.

When was the last time you righted a wrong in a public place? What was the ‘wrong’ and how did you fix it?

Because my husband publishes a local newspaper, I have the opportunity to write about issues in the community. An article I felt needed to be written regarded a harsh discipline policy in the local middle school. A teacher had taken advantage of this policy to molest at least 8 girls over a period of 10 years. (He pled guilty.) My article, based on an interview with the attorney who prosecuted the case, explained how child molesters work. The most surprising and important thing to know is that molesters are rarely strangers, but almost always a trusted adult who has some relationship with the victim. The other important fact is that almost no children lie about having been molested.

For reasons probably exclusive of my article, the discipline policy at the school has been revised.

How old do you think is the right age for a first romantic kiss? How old were you when you had your first romantic kiss?

Thirty-five. Does that sound unreasonable? Oh, did I mention I have a teenage daughter?

I was seventeen, but I’m not sure how romantic the kiss was.

Now, for the most revealing question of all…

Do like your hero in boxers, briefs, or commando?

This is a toughie, because I prefer my guys clothed. But I’d say it depends on body type. A bigger, more muscular guy looks better in boxers. A leaner fellow can go with briefs. Commando just makes me worry about zippers and things.

Okay Alyssa Kress, I think I’ve got enough information – for now. But I know where to find you and I may need to do some follow up.

Oh, and Alyssa, this interview is confidential. I know you like to talk too much – you’ve admitted it here. Let me give you a piece of advice: Keep our little chat to yourself. If anyone’s going to share your secrets, it’s going to be me…
